Apple’s macOS 14.2 RC: What’s new in the latest update

Apple is on the brink of releasing macOS 14.2 RC, marking a significant step in the evolution of its operating system. This release candidate is expected to be the final version before the public release, provided no significant issues arise.

The macOS 14.2 update promises several exciting features, including enhanced sticker reactions for iMessage, allowing users to respond with Live Stickers, Memoji, or Animoji. Another notable addition is the editing option for playlists, enabling customization with personal covers and descriptions. This aligns with similar capabilities in iOS 17.1.

One of the most significant updates in macOS 14.2 is the iMessage Contact Key Verification feature. It elevates messaging security by enabling users to manually verify contacts, ensuring they’re communicating with the intended person. This feature integrates advanced protections against sophisticated attacks and impersonation attempts in conversations.

While macOS 14.2 includes these new features, some anticipated elements remain absent, such as PDF intelligent form detection and enhanced autofill capabilities. The update also lacks support for multiple timers, a feature helpful for simultaneous tracking of different activities.

macOS 14.2 also integrates improvements to existing apps and functionalities. The Apple Music app will now support collaborative playlists, although this feature’s availability in the latest beta is unclear. Furthermore, the update includes support for Favorite Songs Playlist and Listening History in Apple Music, along with the ability to disable these features in Focus mode.

For developers, the macOS 14.2 RC SDK, bundled with Xcode 15.1, offers tools to develop applications compatible with the new OS version. It includes updates to iMessage Contact Key Verification, Messages, and StoreKit, among other areas. This update also resolves known issues and enhances existing functionalities.

As Apple gears up for the official release of macOS Sonoma 14.2, it continues to seed RC versions of other operating systems, including iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, watchOS 10.2, and tvOS 17.2, ensuring a cohesive update across its ecosystem.
