Electric vehicles face 79% more maintenance issues than their gas and diesel-powered counterparts

Consumer Reports’ latest vehicle reliability survey has cast a spotlight on the growing pains of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids. The extensive study, which analyzed data from over 330,000 vehicles ranging from 2000 to 2023 models, reveals that EVs are encountering 79% more maintenance issues compared to their gas- and diesel-powered counterparts. Similarly, plug-in hybrids are grappling with 146% more problems, underscoring the challenges faced by the industry in adapting to this relatively new technology.

The Trouble Areas

The survey identified 20 potential trouble areas, ranging from minor issues like squeaky brakes to more significant problems involving transmission, engines, or EV batteries. It was found that EVs typically have 12 potential trouble areas, compared to 17 for internal combustion engine vehicles. This data was combined with track testing, owner satisfaction results, and safety information to assign a numerical reliability score to each brand.

Mixed Results for Different Hybrids

While plug-in hybrids struggle with a longer list of potential problems, non-plugin hybrids seem to fare better, suffering from 26% fewer issues than traditional vehicles. The survey highlights reliable brands in this category, such as Lexus and Toyota, which have models scoring well above average.

Electric Pickups and SUVs: Room for Improvement

The survey painted a mediocre picture for fully electric cars and SUVs, with average scores hovering around the mid-40s. Electric pickups, a newer technology, scored even lower, averaging around 30. Lexus emerged as a top performer among EV brands, with most of its models scoring above average.

Tesla: Middle of the Pack

Once a synonym for electric vehicles, Tesla now finds its overall scores in the middle range, alongside brands like Chevrolet and Cadillac. While Tesla’s EV powertrains perform well, issues with bodywork, paint, and climate systems have impacted its reliability scores.

Regional Variations

Asian automakers lead the pack with the highest average scores in the survey, followed by European and then U.S. brands. This regional variation highlights differing levels of expertise and experience in the evolving EV market.

Consumer Concerns and the Road Ahead

The survey points out that reliability concerns, along with issues like high costs and insufficient charging infrastructure, may hinder consumer adoption of EVs. Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Auto Testing at Consumer Reports, describes the situation as a period of ‘growing pains’ for the industry.

Improvement Trends

Despite these challenges, there is a silver lining. The gap in problem rates between EVs and traditional vehicles is narrowing, particularly in the 2023 model year, suggesting an improvement in EV reliability over time. However, newer vehicles generally exhibit fewer problems, which may increase as they age.

The journey towards reliable electric vehicles is proving to be a challenging one, with significant obstacles still to be overcome. As manufacturers continue to refine and improve their technologies, it is expected that the reliability of EVs will enhance, making them a more viable option for consumers in the future.
