Knightscope Secures Federal Approval for Security Robot Operations

  • Knightscope gains ATO from FedRAMP for ASR deployment.

  • ATO certifies security, benefitting government and private sectors.

  • Company eyes growth with new products and increased market reach.

Knightscope Inc., a manufacturer of security robots, has been granted Authority to Operate under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This accreditation positions the company on the FedRAMP Marketplace as a credible provider for federal entities.

Securing Government Confidence in Cloud-Based Security

FedRAMP assures federal agencies of the integrity of cloud technologies. Knightscope’s Authority to Operate (ATO) certification paves the way for the deployment of its K5 Autonomous Security Robot (ASR) through a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mercedes Soria, Knightscope’s executive vice president and chief intelligence officer, emphasized the company’s dedication to national security. A near three-year endeavor led by Soria culminated in achieving the ATO, which she believes enhances the company’s security measures and benefits commercial and civilian sectors.

Understanding the ATO’s Impact

The ATO provides a unified framework for the evaluation, authorization, and ongoing security monitoring of cloud products used by the U.S. government. Attaining this certification is a prolonged process that can potentially open doors to lucrative federal contracts. The ATO indicates a supplier’s system is considered secure against cyber threats and has a balance of benefits over potential risks.

Given Knightscope’s use of visual data collection, achieving the ATO is vital. The robots patrol federal facilities, potentially encountering sensitive information. Without suitable security measures, this information could compromise both the premises and national security. Knightscope is among 324 companies to have received ATO certification to date.

Knightscope’s Ambitious Roadmap and Future Projects

Following a significant proof of concept and successful field operations generating substantial revenue, Knightscope is advancing its product offerings with the K5 robot, K1 Hemisphere stationary sensor system, and its Automated Gunshot Detection (AGD) feature. William Santana Li, Knightscope’s CEO, outlines future goals including high profit margins and efficiency improvements.

The company is also developing the larger K7 autonomous security vehicle and considering strategic acquisitions. Knightscope’s achievement of the ATO serves as a trust signal to private sector clients and expands its market potential, according to Santana Li.
