Highlights

  • Sony adapts "God of War," "Horizon" for TV series.

  • "God of War" series to faithfully echo game material.

  • Other PlayStation franchises are also being adapted.

Sony is transforming its popular PlayStation franchises into television series, confirming ongoing projects for “God of War” and “Horizon.” These projects are part of a broader trend by Sony to adapt its video game properties for screen, with “God of War” heading to Amazon Prime Video and “Horizon” being developed at Netflix. Updates on the status of these adaptations were provided during Sony’s CES 2024 press conference.

Development Progress and Creative Teams

Scriptwriting for both “God of War” and “Horizon” is in progress. While casting and further details remain undisclosed, notable industry figures have been attached to “God of War.” Rafe Judkins of “The Wheel of Time” fame will act as showrunner, with “The Expanse” writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and Cory Barlog, director of the game’s 2018 installment, taking an executive producer role.

Adherence to Source Material

The head of television at Amazon Studios, Vernon Sanders, has emphasized that the “God of War” series will closely align with the original video game, promising authenticity and a standalone appeal for both fans and newcomers.

Sony is also developing other titles into various entertainment formats, such as “Ghost of Tsushima,” “Days Gone,” and “Gravity Rush.” Meanwhile, the successful adaptation of “The Last of Us” by HBO is set to return with a second season, signaling a robust pipeline of content from PlayStation’s storied catalog.
