Compatibility with High-Tech Vehicles
Only a select group of vehicles that accommodate a dual-screen Apple Maps CarPlay setup, which includes a supplementary view in the driver’s display or head-up display, can utilize the new feature. Brands like BMW, Volvo, and Polestar pioneered this functionality in some of their models, although the adoption rate among car manufacturers has been gradual. The user now has the ability to control what specific navigation information displays in the instrument cluster.
Previously, vehicles with driver displays supporting Apple Maps lacked the ability to showcase certain guidance prompts, such as text directions for turns or lane changes. With the latest iOS 17.4 enhancement, however, drivers can now receive detailed turn-by-turn navigation directly in front of them, reducing the need to glance at the central infotainment screen.
This update targets both developer and public beta tester communities at present. Broad user accessibility is slated for March, following the public release of iOS 17.4.
