The PC gaming market continues to grow robustly, with projections indicating a rise from 873.5 million players in 2023 to 907.5 million by 2024. This expansion highlights the enduring appeal of PC gaming, supported by a diverse range of titles that cater to various player preferences. As the industry evolves, understanding the dynamics of player engagement remains crucial for developers and publishers aiming to meet the demands of a loyal and expanding user base.

In recent years, the trend shows that a significant portion of PC gamers prefer enduring titles over the latest releases. This pattern suggests that players find value in revisiting classic games or engaging with titles that offer long-term content and community support. The sustained interest in older games underscores the importance of game longevity and the potential for developers to maintain a loyal audience through continuous updates and support.

PC Player Base Growth

NewZoo’s annual survey of 73,000 players reveals a steady increase in the PC gaming population. The firm projects that the number of PC gamers will reach 907.5 million in 2024, surpassing the console audience, which is estimated at 653.1 million.

“The PC market is experiencing a consistent growth rate, driven by both new and returning players,”

stated Ben Porter, director at NewZoo. This growth is attributed to the accessibility of PC gaming, where a wide array of games is available at varying price points, attracting a diverse demographic.

Preference for Older Games

A noteworthy 67% of player hours on PC are dedicated to games that are six or more years old. The most played titles within this category include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, Roblox, Dota 2, and Fortnite. These games have maintained their popularity through regular updates and strong community support, making them staples in the PC gaming landscape.

“Our data shows that 92% of PC gaming time is spent on games older than two years,”

NewZoo emphasized, highlighting the preference for established titles over newer releases.

Industry vs. Consumer Trends

There appears to be a disconnect between industry focus and player preferences. While the industry often highlights the latest game releases and trends, the majority of PC gamers continue to engage with older, well-established titles. This divergence suggests that developers may benefit from aligning their strategies more closely with player interests, potentially by investing in the support and expansion of existing popular games rather than solely launching new projects.

The prominence of free-to-play (F2P) models among the most played titles indicates that economic accessibility plays a significant role in player engagement. PC platforms offer numerous opportunities for players to access games without significant financial barriers, contributing to the sustained interest in longstanding favorites. This economic model supports a diverse gaming ecosystem where both new and old games can thrive, catering to a wide range of player preferences and budgets.

Understanding the sustained popularity of older games provides valuable insights for the gaming industry. Developers and publishers can leverage this knowledge to enhance player retention and satisfaction by focusing on game longevity and community engagement. By recognizing the factors that drive continued interest in established titles, the industry can better cater to the evolving needs of the gaming community.

NewZoo’s findings emphasize the importance of balancing innovation with the preservation of beloved game titles. As the PC gaming market grows, maintaining a diverse portfolio that includes both new releases and enduring classics will be key to sustaining player interest and industry success. Developers are encouraged to invest in the ongoing development and support of existing games to meet the preferences of a dedicated and expanding player base.
