In a significant development during their ongoing strike, SAG-AFTRA has introduced new waivers to support budding game developers. New Waiver Agreements Introduced
SAG-AFTRA introduced the Student Interactive Waiver Agreement and the Game Jam Waiver Agreement, allowing union members to participate in specific student projects and game jams. These waivers set criteria to ensure that the projects align with the union’s objectives while providing actors with authorized work opportunities.
“Our members are passionate about this industry and they want to be able to participate in these types of projects where the future of video games is being shaped,” stated Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator.
Strike Motivated by AI Concerns
The ongoing 8-month strike, which began on March 26, is primarily driven by fears over artificial intelligence. Actors seek protections against AI misuse, particularly the unauthorized use of their likeness and performances. This stance reflects broader industry apprehensions about technology’s role in creative fields.
“I feel worried not because the technology exists, not even because game companies want to use it. Of course they do, they always want to use technological advancements. I just imagine a video like this coming out that does have someone’s performance attached to it.”

The strike has affected prominent game studios, leading to reused voiceover clips in games like League of Legends and incomplete voice lines in Destiny 2 episodes. These changes highlight the strike’s tangible effects on game production schedules and content delivery.
