Bargersville Police Department has embraced electric vehicles to enhance operational efficiency. By integrating Tesla models into their fleet, the department aims to modernize its transportation strategy while achieving substantial cost reductions. This shift not only supports environmental sustainability but also addresses long-term financial planning for the force.
Recent reports indicate that the adoption of Tesla vehicles has significantly outperformed previous cost-saving measures implemented by the department. The transition to electric vehicles marks a pivotal change in how the police department manages its resources and maintenance over time.
How Significant Are the Savings?
The Bargersville Police Department began with a single Tesla in 2019 and has since expanded its fleet to thirteen vehicles.
“I couldn’t even begin to say how much money the department has saved. Since 2020, I’d say we’ve been saving about $70-80,000 a year from having our vehicles, and the more cars we get, the more savings too,”
explained Police Chief Todd Bertram. Over five years, these savings have accumulated to nearly half a million dollars in maintenance and repair costs.
What Impact Does It Have on Taxpayers?
The switch to Tesla cars has markedly reduced expenses related to fuel and vehicle upkeep. Chief Bertram highlighted that in June 2024, the department’s traditional vehicles incurred a gas bill exceeding $3,100, whereas the Tesla fleet’s charging costs totaled only $300 for the same period. This represents a significant reduction in taxpayer expenditures.
Are Maintenance Costs Lower?
Maintenance for the Tesla fleet has proven to be less burdensome than that of gasoline-powered vehicles.
“That Tesla’s turn-around time was only three days and it was covered under warranty which means we didn’t have to pay. Compare that to a gas vehicle that had to stay in the shop for a week,”
stated Chief Bertram. The electric vehicles have also shown longevity, with no brake replacements needed and repairs handled promptly under warranty.
Transitioning to electric vehicles like Tesla’s models provides police departments with a sustainable and financially prudent alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. The significant cost savings realized by the Bargersville Police Department demonstrate the potential benefits for other law enforcement agencies considering similar moves. Additionally, the reduced environmental impact aligns with broader municipal goals for sustainability and responsible resource management.
