Samsung’s latest Galaxy S24 lineup, which includes the S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra models, has introduced cutting-edge OLED screens that boast a remarkable capability of achieving up to 2600 nits of peak brightness when used outdoors. This feature positions the new Galaxy series to outperform Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro in terms of display technology.

Enhanced Visual Comfort with Elevated PWM Refresh Rates

The screens employed in the Galaxy S24 series have been designed with a focus on visual comfort, incorporating a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) refresh rate of 492Hz. This rate is significantly higher than that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 series, which had a PWM rate of 240Hz. The improvement aims to reduce eye strain for users with sensitivity to screen flickering.

Comparative Performance with Market Competitors

When compared to its market rivals, the Galaxy S24 series stands out. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro operates at a PWM rate of 480Hz, and Google’s Pixel 8 screens are limited to 246Hz. In contrast, some Chinese smartphones have reached PWM dimming rates as high as 1920Hz or 2160Hz, emphasizing the competitive nature of display technologies in the smartphone industry.

The Galaxy S24 series’ advanced OLED technology is particularly beneficial for users with sensitivity to PWM dimming, as it minimizes the flickering effect that can cause discomfort and banding. However, for users who do not experience such sensitivity, the higher PWM refresh rate of the S24 series may not be a significant selling point.
