In an article published by IET Intelligent Transport Systems, EarlyView, a study explores the application of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in adaptive traffic signal control. The research highlights how artificial intelligence can optimize traffic flow at intersections, significantly reducing wait times for vehicles. This approach utilizes Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) to train local agents, which then collaborate to form a global agent for efficient traffic management. The study employs deep neural networks to augment the learning capabilities of reinforcement learning. Local agents are trained individually using the Double Deep Q-Network method. Simulation of urban mobility is used to model and test traffic flow conditions, providing a controlled environment to evaluate the proposed DRL method. Improvements in intersection efficiency and reductions in the overall average waiting time for vehicles are notable benefits of this approach. The study’s findings indicate that the multi-agent reinforcement learning model outperforms existing traffic control strategies, such as PASSER-V and pre-timed signal settings, in terms of minimizing average vehicle waiting time and queue lengths.

Comparative Analysis

Compared to past developments, such as traditional pre-timed signal systems and the PASSER-V model, the multi-agent DRL approach demonstrates a more dynamic and responsive method for traffic signal coordination. This new implementation of DRL offers real-time adjustments, proving significantly more effective in managing congestion.

Previous advancements in adaptive signal control have shown incremental improvements. However, the integration of deep reinforcement learning, particularly through a multi-agent system, marks a notable shift towards higher efficiency and adaptability. Unlike earlier methods, which often required manual inputs and adjustments, the DRL approach autonomously learns and adapts, minimizing human intervention and thereby reducing the potential for errors or delays in traffic signal adjustments.

The study illustrates the substantial benefits of using a multi-agent DRL model for traffic signal coordination. By leveraging deep neural networks and Double Deep Q-Network techniques, the system can dynamically respond to real-time traffic conditions, greatly enhancing intersection efficiency. This method surpasses previous traffic control models by significantly reducing vehicle wait times and queue lengths, offering a more effective solution for modern urban traffic management challenges.
