Previous reports have highlighted ABB and AUAR’s commitment to sustainable building solutions. Their ongoing partnership has consistently focused on leveraging robotics to enhance construction processes. The establishment of ConstrucThor builds upon their past successes, reflecting a continued dedication to reducing the carbon footprint of construction projects through technological advancements.

How Will ConstrucThor Advance Sustainable Construction?

ConstrucThor is designed to function as a living laboratory, enabling the exploration of energy-neutral infrastructure and climate-neutral building materials. By utilizing AUAR’s micro-factory technology alongside ABB’s robotic systems, the facility will test and develop new methods for constructing buildings with minimal environmental impact. This initiative is expected to lead to significant improvements in how buildings are designed and constructed in the future.

What Role Do AUAR’s Micro-Factories Play?

AUAR’s micro-factories are central to the ConstrucThor project, providing a modular and automated approach to building construction. These facilities can produce the core and shell of a home in less than 12 hours, significantly reducing construction time and waste. The integration of ABB robotics ensures high precision and repeatability in the manufacturing process, enhancing overall efficiency and sustainability.

How Will the Partnership Expand Globally?

ABB and AUAR plan to scale their collaboration by expanding the network of micro-factories to ten locations by next year. This expansion will include the addition of seven partners across Europe and North America, aiming to manufacture housing components closer to their final destinations. Such a strategy is intended to minimize transportation costs and environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for sustainable housing solutions.

The ConstrucThor initiative not only showcases the potential of robotic automation in construction but also serves as an educational hub for industry professionals and researchers. By fostering collaboration between KU Leuven University and various industry partners, the facility will drive forward innovative strategies that address both environmental challenges and workforce shortages in the construction sector.

ABB and AUAR’s collaboration exemplifies how technology can be harnessed to create more sustainable and efficient construction practices. The integration of advanced robotics with modular construction techniques holds promise for reducing the environmental impact of building projects worldwide. As the ConstrucThor facility progresses, it is expected to set new standards for sustainability and innovation in the construction industry.
