The “SECURITY AND PRIVACY” journal recently published an insightful article titled “A trust distributed learning (D‐NWDAF) against poisoning and byzantine attacks in B5G networks.” This piece introduces an innovative framework designed to tackle the challenges of securing Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. The article dives into the intricacies of Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) and the vulnerabilities associated with Federated Learning (FL) in these networks. The proposed methods aim to enhance both the detection and explanation of FL-based attacks, thereby increasing the transparency and reliability of network operations.

Enhanced Distributed Learning for B5G

The emergence of smart services and automated management archetypes in B5G networks underscores the necessity of advanced machine learning algorithms for dynamic decision-making. Distributed Learning, recognized as Distributed NWDAF Architecture (D‐NWDAF), has exhibited proficiency in creating collaborative deep learning models among several network slices. This architecture not only ensures the efficiency of these models but also guarantees the privacy and isolation of each network slice.

Despite these advancements, Federated Learning (FL) remains susceptible to various attacks. In scenarios where FL nodes (Leaf NWDAF: AI‐VNFs) submit malicious updates to the FL central (root NWDAF) entity, the integrity of the FL global model can be compromised, adversely affecting overall network performance. The identification of attacks in FL-based solutions often results in “black-box” decisions, which do not offer clarity on the reasons behind their occurrence, making these solutions less reliable for B5G slice managers.

Dimensional Reduction and Explainable AI

To mitigate these issues, the article proposes leveraging Dimensional Reduction (DR) and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) algorithms. These technologies aim to improve the detection of attacks while elucidating the decision-making process of FL-based attack detection mechanisms. The novel DR-XAI-powered framework presented in the article is designed to build a deep learning model in a federated manner to predict key performance indicators (KPI) of network slices. Subsequently, the framework utilizes DR and XAI models, such as RuleFit, to identify malicious FL nodes, thereby enhancing trust, transparency, and explanation of attack detection while maintaining data privacy.

In past literature, discussions on securing B5G networks have often emphasized the potential of machine learning and AI in network management and security. Previous research has explored various models for enhancing network reliability and privacy, yet the integration of DR and XAI into Federated Learning for attack detection remains a relatively novel approach. This article distinguishes itself by focusing on the dual objectives of improving attack detection precision and providing a transparent explanation of the detection process.

Comparing this with earlier studies, the emphasis on explainability in attack detection marks a significant shift. Traditional methods have primarily concentrated on the accuracy of attack detection, often neglecting the importance of understanding and trusting these decisions. The current framework’s use of DR and XAI not only aims to enhance detection accuracy but also seeks to build confidence among B5G stakeholders by providing clear insights into how detections are made.

As B5G networks continue to develop, ensuring robust security measures becomes increasingly crucial. The integration of DR and XAI within a federated learning framework represents a promising advancement towards this goal. By addressing both attack detection and the transparency of these detections, the proposed framework seeks to foster greater trust among B5G network stakeholders. Such advancements may pave the way for further research and development in securing next-generation networks.
