The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) presents a dual-edged sword; while it offers immense opportunities, it simultaneously exposes vulnerabilities. A recent survey conducted by PSA Certified exposes a significant gap between the speed of AI development and the implementation of security measures to protect products, devices, and services. This divide has prompted concerns about the potential risks posed by bad actors exploiting these vulnerabilities, highlighting the urgent need for better security strategies.

Research on this topic has consistently highlighted the urgency of adopting robust security protocols. With emerging AI use cases, especially those leveraging edge computing, companies and policymakers have been urged to prioritize security. Edge computing, which processes data locally on devices, presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The shift away from centralized cloud systems to local processing can enhance efficiency and privacy but requires stringent security measures.

Security Concerns and AI Expansion

The survey of 1,260 global technology leaders revealed that 68% are worried about the pace of AI advancements surpassing the industry’s ability to secure its applications. This concern is driving a notable increase in edge computing adoption, with 85% of respondents believing that security issues will push more AI applications to the edge.

“There is an important interconnect between AI and security: one doesn’t scale without the other,” cautioned David Maidment, Senior Director, Market Strategy at Arm.

The connection between AI proliferation and security vulnerabilities has been emphasized by industry experts, suggesting that a balanced approach is necessary for sustained growth.

Consistency in Security Investments

Despite recognizing the critical nature of security, a sizeable gap exists between awareness and actual investment in security measures. Only half of the surveyed respondents feel their current security investments are adequate. Furthermore, fundamental security practices like independent certifications and threat modeling are frequently overlooked.

“It’s more imperative than ever that those in the connected device ecosystem don’t skip best practice security in the hunt for AI features,” emphasized Maidment.

Such statements underscore the need for comprehensive security practices to keep pace with the rapid AI advancements.

The findings suggest a holistic approach to AI security is necessary. From the deployment of devices to managing AI models at the edge, embedding security throughout the AI lifecycle is crucial. This includes adopting security-by-design principles to build consumer trust and mitigate risks. Despite the challenges, a majority of decision-makers (67%) are optimistic about their ability to manage AI-related security threats, indicating a growing recognition of the need for prioritizing security investments.

Looking at similar surveys and industry reports from the past, the trend of lagging security measures in the face of rapid AI advancements is not new. The fundamental issue of balancing innovation with security has been a recurring theme. However, the current emphasis on edge computing as a solution indicates a shift in strategy, reflecting the evolving landscape of AI technology and its associated risks.

Organizations aiming to fully harness AI’s potential must ensure they address security risks effectively. As stakeholders in the connected device ecosystem rapidly adopt AI-enabled use cases, they must not overlook the security implications. Prioritizing security investment is imperative to maintain consumer trust and safeguard against emerging threats. The need for a proactive, security-focused approach in the AI lifecycle is clearer than ever, bridging the gap between rapid advancements and robust protection measures.
