Despite the widespread adoption of AI-powered coding assistants—GitHub reported that 97% of surveyed developers in 2024 use such tools—security professionals have observed persistent and novel vulnerabilities in code generated by large language models (LLMs). Research such as BaxBench demonstrates that more than 60% of AI-written code samples contain errors or exploitable flaws, and improving security through careful prompting delivers only slight benefits. Attempts to bolster security by integrating guardrails or agent-based reviews sometimes clash with the need for usability and speed, factors valued highly in startup and prototyping environments.

How Do Perceptions Differ Among Stakeholders?

Executives tend to express greater optimism about the cybersecurity potential of AI-generated code, while practitioners remain skeptical. A study by Exabeam highlights this gap, attributing executive enthusiasm to perceived cost savings and innovation, as opposed to analysts’ and developers’ concerns about latent vulnerabilities and oversight. Even independent security assessments, such as those discussed by Veracode and at security conferences, indicate that AI-generated code’s vulnerability rate is often similar to or higher than traditionally developed software.

What Is the Role of Human Oversight in a “Vibe Coding” World?

With AI increasingly taking on code generation, experts debate the proper balance between reliance on automation and the need for human oversight. Some specialists point to the phenomenon of “vibe coding,” where developers leave much of the programming to AI, as an example of how efficiency can compromise scrutiny.

“Speed is the natural enemy of quality and security and scalability,”

one expert observed. Nevertheless, many argue that the issue is not unique to AI; even human-generated code, created under pressure, can harbor substantial risks, suggesting that secure development is an ongoing challenge regardless of the approach.

Both startups and established companies are leveraging a range of generative AI coding products, from industry-led solutions like GitHub Copilot and OpenAI models to offerings from Cursor, Bolt, and Lovable. With so many options making development accessible for those without formal training, the total amount of software—and consequently, the potential attack surface—continues to expand. This proliferation increases the urgency for better automated safeguards, as manual code review and security training cannot scale at the same rate as AI-powered output.

Current evidence suggests that generative AI is neither a panacea nor an inherent danger for code security, but a development that increases the complexity of securing software at scale. The gap between executive vision and practitioner caution shows the importance of critical evaluation of security tools and processes. The allure of rapid prototyping and expanded participation from nontraditional developers comes with the tradeoff of introducing new classes of vulnerabilities. As AI coding tools become ubiquitous, organizations would benefit from investing in specialized security benchmarks, automated code analysis, and context-sensitive guardrails, rather than solely trusting in improved efficiencies. Both newcomers and seasoned developers need to view AI-generated code with skepticism and supplement it with robust security practices and oversight to maintain software quality as machine-generated development grows.
