Many iPhone users have encountered the need to replace their Apple Lightning cables due to damage or wear. There is a common assumption that these proprietary cables have a short lifespan.
Durability Testing by Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports conducted extensive testing at the end of 2023, comparing the durability of charging cables from various manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, Belkin, and Anker. Their findings revealed some surprising results.
The evaluation included two rigorous assessments: The Bend Test and the Twist Test. Cables were bent at a 90-degree angle and twisted while powering an LED-lit makeup mirror to measure their endurance.
The results showed that Apple’s $29 iPhone Lightning cable and a $6.55 Amazon Basics USB-C cable both demonstrated superior longevity in the tests.
José Amézquita of Consumer Reports highlighted the exceptional performance of the Amazon Basics cable in the bend test, equating its durability to six years of usage. The expensive Apple cable was also commended for its worthwhile investment given its impressive durability.
Despite these findings, all cables tested surpassed a usage expectancy of 1.5 years. Anker and Belkin cables also performed well, withstanding over 5,000 bends which is indicative of almost three years of life.
Conclusion: Apple Cables Worthy of Purchase?
Apple’s cables, while pricey, have shown their worth in terms of durability. Nonetheless, other brands also offer quality cables, though a few, such as Amazon Basics USB-A to Lightning, should be avoided. Consumer Reports did not compare USB-C to USB-C cables from Apple or other brands in this test.
