Apple has introduced visionOS 2 at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), following the launch of the Apple Vision Pro earlier this year. This update aims to enhance the features and functionalities of the initial visionOS, further expanding its capabilities. Alongside the software update, Apple will roll out the Vision Pro in new markets such as the UK, Germany, Singapore, and Hong Kong, broadening its global reach.

The Apple Vision Pro, unveiled in early 2023, is a mixed reality headset that combines augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) features. Designed to offer an immersive digital experience, it integrates advanced display technologies and a wide field of view. The Vision Pro allows users to interact with digital content in their physical space, making it suitable for both professional and casual use. Initially launched in the United States, Apple leverages this device as a pioneer in its AR/VR lineup.

visionOS 1 was the inaugural software for the Vision Pro, introducing foundational features but with room for enhancements. With the launch of visionOS 2, Apple seeks to build on this foundation by adding new features and improvements. However, the new version remains incremental rather than a radical overhaul. Comparatively, visionOS 2 introduces additional functionalities that broaden user interactions and customization options, but it does not dramatically shift the user experience.

New Features and Improvements

visionOS 2 introduces a Multiview feature for sports enthusiasts, allowing them to watch multiple MLB and MLS games simultaneously. This feature, however, excludes other leagues like the NBA and NFL, and will roll out later in 2024. Gesture improvements also form a part of the update, enabling users to access Home View and recently visited apps via hand gestures, enhancing the device’s intuitive control.

Customization options have been expanded in visionOS 2, with users now able to rearrange apps on their screens similarly to iPhone and iPad. This customization ensures a more personalized user experience. Additionally, the new Virtual Display feature will assist creative professionals by enabling multiple screen views, enhancing multitasking capabilities. This feature is slated for later in 2024.

Additional Features

Apple has also introduced a Guest User feature, allowing friends to try the Vision Pro without affecting the owner’s settings. Travel Mode has been enhanced to include train travel alongside air travel, stabilizing visuals for a smoother experience. Moreover, mirroring capabilities have been incorporated, enabling Vision Pro to mirror content via AirPlay from iPhones and iPads, but not Macs.

For content creators, visionOS 2 brings spatial video editing, allowing for project edits within Final Cut Pro. This feature, aimed at enhancing the workflow of creators, will be available later in the year. These additions aim to offer a more robust and versatile user experience, catering to a broader range of use cases and preferences.

Key Takeaways

  • Guest User feature allows multiple people to try Vision Pro.
  • Virtual Display enhances multitasking for creative professionals.
  • Multiview initially supports only MLB and MLS games.

While visionOS 2 introduces several new features and improvements, it is more of an evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary one. Users will benefit from increased customization, enhanced gesture controls, and new capabilities like Guest User and Virtual Display. However, many features, such as Multiview and spatial video editing, won’t be available immediately, giving users time to decide whether an immediate upgrade is necessary. By expanding its market reach and enhancing its software, Apple continues to solidify the Vision Pro as a significant player in the AR/VR space.
