Apple, a tech giant known for its innovative products, is currently embroiled in a patent dispute with medical device maker Masimo. This legal battle has led to a significant development: the US International Trade Commission imposed a ban on the import and sale of certain Apple Watch models, specifically the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2.

Ripple Effects on Apple Watch Sales and Services

As a result of this ruling, Apple has ceased online sales of these models, with in-store sales set to follow suit. Apple’s response to this situation includes halting sales on its website from December 21st and removing the products from physical store shelves after December 24th.

However, third-party retailers may continue selling them, albeit with dwindling supplies due to the import ban.

Challenges for Apple Watch Owners

This situation poses a challenge for owners of the banned Apple Watch models, especially those out of warranty. According to reports by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has informed its customer service teams that out-of-warranty hardware repairs and whole unit replacements for Apple Watch Series 6 and later (excluding the SE model) are temporarily unavailable.

Customers with devices under warranty or the AppleCare Plus program are not affected by this.

Efforts to Resolve the Patent Dispute

The core of the dispute revolves around the SpO2 sensor integrated into the Apple Watch Series 6 through Ultra 2. Apple is reportedly working on a software update to circumvent further infringement of Masimo’s patents, although Masimo contends that the issue is fundamentally related to hardware, necessitating more profound changes.

Apple’s current legal tussle with Masimo over patent infringement highlights the complexities of tech innovation and intellectual property rights. The implications of this dispute extend beyond just sales disruptions; they affect customer service and product availability, underscoring the urgency for Apple to resolve this issue. As Apple navigates this challenge, the outcome of this dispute will likely influence its approach to future technology developments and collaborations.
