Aspyr is set to release a remastered version of Tomb Raider 4-6, aiming to revitalize the classic action-adventure series by Core Design. Building on the success of last year’s remasters for the first three Tomb Raider games, the new remaster will not only update graphics and controls but also reinstate previously cut content from Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. This effort reflects Aspyr’s commitment to preserving and enhancing beloved titles for both new and returning players.
Earlier releases of Tomb Raider remasters were well-received for their graphical improvements and refined gameplay. However, the addition of previously cut content in The Angel of Darkness has generated anticipation among longtime fans. Aspyr’s approach appears to balance nostalgic elements with modern gaming standards, addressing past criticisms while offering new experiences.
Reintroduced Weapons and Abilities
The remastered release brings back the Chirugai, a melee weapon used by Kurtis Trent, the second playable character in Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Resembling the Glaive from the sci-fi film Krull, the Chirugai adds a distinct combat option for players. Additionally, Kurtis is now equipped with the ability to project a psychic shield and enhanced stealth movements, enabling actions like shooting around corners and sprinting similar to Lara Croft.
Restored Game Areas and Features
Aspyr has reinstated an unfinished training area from the original game, located in the Parisian Back Streets level. This area was intended to teach players the commando crawl ability but was previously removed before release.
Players can choose whether they want to take this route or the one from the original game.
This addition allows for greater exploration and variety in gameplay routes.
Enhanced In-Game Shops and Inventory
The remaster improves the functionality of in-game stores, including Rennes’ pawnshop and the herbalist. These shops now offer useful items such as silencers and laser sights, which can be purchased by collecting in-game currency, Euros. This update enhances the player’s ability to customize and upgrade their equipment, providing a more engaging inventory system.
Aspyr’s Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered aims to address the shortcomings of The Angel of Darkness by reintroducing cut content and enhancing gameplay mechanics. While restoring features like the Chirugai and new abilities for Kurtis Trent adds depth, the core challenges of the original game remain. Players may appreciate the nostalgic elements alongside the modern updates, but expectations should be managed regarding significant improvements beyond the graphical and control enhancements.
