Digital Sun, renowned for Moonlighter, has introduced Cataclismo on Steam Early Access. Players can now experience a post-apocalyptic real-time strategy game where survival hinges on daytime defenses and nocturnal battles against Horrors. This title marks an intriguing addition to the survival game genre, offering unique gameplay mechanics and community-driven content.

Innovative Building Mechanics

Cataclismo allows players to construct defenses using a LEGO-like system. This mechanic lets users set up traps and choke points while strategically moving units. A notable aspect is the potential damage to troops if walls are destroyed, necessitating constant vigilance over defensive structures. As Prosperity increases, it unlocks more troops, upgrades, and buildings, enhancing gameplay depth.

Diverse Gameplay Modes

The Early Access version features several modes to keep players engaged. Campaign Mode includes 11 levels spread across two distinct biomes and comes with full voice-acting. Additionally, Skirmish Mode and Endless Mode offer varied challenges. A Level Editor is integrated, supported by Steam Workshop, to foster a community for sharing and downloading user-created maps and blueprints.

Digital Sun plans to expand Cataclismo over time, adding new biomes and levels. The developer anticipates staying in Early Access until at least the early months of 2025, allowing for continuous updates and improvements based on player feedback.

Previously, Digital Sun’s Moonlighter had a significant impact with its mix of shopkeeping and dungeon-crawling. Cataclismo follows a different path, focusing on survival and strategy rather than exploration and commerce. Comparably, the developer has maintained its reputation for unique gameplay mechanics, aiming to capture a niche audience with this release.

In contrast to other survival strategy games that often lack user-driven content, Cataclismo emphasizes community involvement through its Level Editor and Steam Workshop support. This approach not only enhances replayability but also fosters a vibrant community around the game, similar to how previous titles by other developers have thrived on user-generated content.

Digital Sun’s approach with Cataclismo offers a blend of innovative mechanics and community engagement. The LEGO-like building system presents strategic depth, while the various game modes ensure diverse experiences. The commitment to extending content through Early Access demonstrates a dedication to evolving gameplay. For players seeking a fresh take on survival strategy games, Cataclismo provides a compelling option with a focus on both single-player and community-driven content.
