Technological Integration and Algorithm Improvement

Detecting obstacles swiftly and accurately is essential for intelligent driving systems. The fusion of LiDAR and camera data has proven to be more effective at managing complex road conditions compared to using a single sensor. Despite this enhancement, the increased computation required to ensure the real-time performance of these sensing algorithms presents a significant hurdle. To address this challenge, researchers have introduced an improved dynamic obstacle detection algorithm that modifies the original YOLOv7 (You Only Look Once version 7) framework.

The improved algorithm incorporates Mobilenetv3 in place of the original YOLOv7’s backbone network, significantly reducing computational overhead. It also integrates a specialized layer tailored for detecting small-scale targets, and a convolutional block attention module to boost detection accuracy for smaller obstacles. Additionally, the algorithm employs the Efficient Intersection over Union Loss function to mitigate issues related to mutual occlusion among detected objects.

Performance Metrics and Testing

On a dataset comprising 27,362 labeled KITTI samples, the enhanced YOLOv7 algorithm exhibits a 92.6% mean average precision and processes 82 frames per second. This results in an 85.9% reduction in model size, with only a minimal 1.5% loss in accuracy compared to the traditional YOLOv7 algorithm. Furthermore, a virtual scene was constructed to test the improved algorithm, integrating LiDAR and camera data effectively. Experimental outcomes on a test vehicle, equipped with both a camera and LiDAR sensor, validate the method’s effectiveness and performance.

Earlier studies in obstacle detection focused primarily on either LiDAR or camera data, typically compromising either accuracy or computational efficiency. Integration of these technologies, as demonstrated in this research, offers a more balanced approach. Previous models often struggled with real-time application due to high computational demands, which this study addresses by optimizing the YOLOv7 algorithm to lower the computational cost significantly.

Comparatively, past efforts to enhance obstacle detection in intelligent driving systems have not achieved the same level of balance between computational efficiency and detection accuracy as seen in this improved YOLOv7 framework. The introduction of Mobilenetv3 and other enhancements contributes to a more practical application in real-world driving scenarios.

The novel improvements presented in this research mark a significant step towards more efficient and reliable intelligent driving systems. The optimized YOLOv7 algorithm not only reduces computational costs but also maintains high levels of detection accuracy. These advancements are crucial for deploying intelligent driving technologies in real-world applications, where real-time processing and accuracy are paramount. The blend of LiDAR and visual data, coupled with the improved algorithm, shows promise for future developments in the field, potentially leading to safer and more intelligent driving solutions.
