As the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape evolves, businesses face increasing challenges in developing and managing IoT applications. The shortage of skilled IoT professionals has prompted companies to seek alternative solutions that can bridge the expertise gap. This shift is driving the adoption of low-code platforms, enabling enterprises to accelerate their IoT initiatives without extensive coding knowledge.

The demand for low-code IoT solutions has been growing, reflecting a broader trend where companies prioritize efficiency and scalability in their technological deployments. By leveraging these platforms, organizations can streamline their development processes, reduce time-to-market, and focus on innovation rather than grappling with complex programming tasks.

How Are Enterprises Addressing IoT Skills Gaps?

Companies are increasingly turning to their IoT connectivity providers for assistance with application development. According to new research, nearly half of cellular IoT adopters expect their connectivity partners to offer professional services related to software and application design. This reliance on external expertise highlights the critical role of service providers in supporting IoT projects.

What Services Are Most in Demand?

The study reveals that application design services are the most sought-after, with 49 percent of respondents seeking professional support. Additionally, 39 percent are interested in application enablement platforms, and 37 percent are looking for application hosting services. These services help organizations manage the complexities of IoT development, from integrating hardware to ensuring secure communications.

How Do Low-Code Platforms Impact IoT Development?

“Low-code platforms don’t just address the skills gap, they fundamentally transform how businesses approach IoT development. By handling the complexity of integrating hardware and managing secure communication protocols, these platforms enable teams to focus on what truly drives value – innovation and differentiation,”

explained Iain Davidson, Senior Product Manager at Wireless Logic. These platforms simplify the development process, allowing companies to allocate resources more effectively and enhance their competitive edge through tailored features and robust security measures.

Wireless Logic’s findings indicate a significant shift towards utilizing low-code tools to mitigate the challenges posed by limited in-house expertise. This approach not only facilitates quicker deployment of IoT solutions but also empowers smaller teams to deliver comprehensive and secure applications, addressing a widespread need in the industry.

In comparison to previous reports, the current trend emphasizes a more pronounced reliance on external service providers and low-code platforms. Earlier studies highlighted the importance of in-house development capabilities, but the present data underscores a strategic pivot towards collaborative and simplified development models to overcome resource constraints.

The adoption of low-code IoT solutions is poised to reshape how enterprises approach their digital transformation initiatives. By reducing the dependency on specialized skills, companies can achieve greater flexibility and resilience in their operations. Furthermore, as the IoT ecosystem continues to expand, the integration of low-code platforms will likely play a pivotal role in sustaining innovation and operational efficiency across various industries.
