Frito-Lay has strengthened its logistics capabilities by increasing its fleet of Tesla Semi electric trucks. The company’s commitment to sustainable transportation is evident as it leverages advanced electric vehicle technology to optimize its delivery operations. This strategic move not only enhances delivery efficiency but also supports environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions.
Previously, Frito-Lay initiated the integration of Tesla Semis into their fleet, signaling a shift towards electrification in their logistics. Earlier reports highlighted the company’s intent to adopt electric trucks to improve sustainability. The recent expansion with additional Semi Chargers indicates progress beyond initial pilot phases, showcasing an accelerated adoption of electric technology compared to earlier stages.
Charger Expansion at Bakersfield Facility
To accommodate the growing number of Tesla Semis, Frito-Lay filed new permits to build an 8-stall Semi Charger array at their Bakersfield, California, plant. This expansion complements existing Semi Chargers at the Modesto factory, facilitating efficient charging for local and regional deliveries.
Tesla’s Manufacturing Plans for Semi Trucks
Tesla is set to increase production of the Semi trucks, with the first high-volume models expected later this year. Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering, stated:
“We just closed out the Semi factory roof and walls last week in Reno, a schedule which is great with the weather. In Reno, you never know what’s going to happen. But we’re prepping for mechanical installation of all the equipment in the coming months. The first builds of the high-volume Semi design will come late this year in 2025 and begin ramping early in 2026.”
Frito-Lay’s Role in Electric Trucking Studies
Frito-Lay, alongside PepsiCo, has been actively participating in pilot programs utilizing Tesla Semis. The trucks have demonstrated capabilities, such as completing a 1,000-mile run in a single day during the “Run on Less EV trucking study.” These initiatives highlight the practical applications and potential of electric trucks in large-scale logistics operations.
The ongoing collaboration between Frito-Lay and Tesla underscores the automotive and logistics sectors’ shift towards electrification. By expanding charging infrastructure and increasing the number of Tesla Semis, Frito-Lay is positioning itself to benefit from lower operational costs and reduced environmental impact. This initiative could serve as a model for other companies looking to adopt electric fleets, emphasizing the importance of adequate charging infrastructure and strategic partnerships in achieving sustainability goals.
