Despite a significant uptick in Bing’s user base following the integration of artificial intelligence, Google has maintained its leading position in the search engine market. For many years, “Google” has been not only a brand name but also a widely-used verb signifying web searching. Even with Bing’s rebranding efforts and its recent AI adoption, Google’s presence remains largely unperturbed.
Bing’s Push With AI Technology
Bing’s enhancement with OpenAI’s generative AI has offered users a more natural interaction, setting it apart from similar AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT. Despite the user base for Bing in the United States more than doubling, the search engine concluded the year 2023 with a mere 3.4% of the global search market share, which is only a minor increase compared to its standing prior to incorporating AI capabilities.
Steady Google Amidst the AI Surge
Google, on the other hand, has maintained a staggering 92% share of the search market, even in the wake of Bing’s gains. There are indications that Google might also be steering towards integrating AI into its search functions in 2024, aiming to reinforce its market position.
In May 2023, Google started testing an experimental AI-enhanced version of its search engine, providing conversational outputs akin to Bing’s offerings but within its traditional search interface. This feature, still in its early stages and available only to select beta testers, signaled Google’s intent to join the AI trend without disrupting user familiarity.
Google has revealed its intent to incorporate the latest language model, Gemini, into this new search experience in the upcoming year. Additionally, Google and Samsung jointly announced that Gemini would also be integrated into Samsung’s latest Galaxy S24 smartphone, marking a significant partnership in the tech industry.
