Hyundai has expanded the charging options for its electric vehicle owners by enabling access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across the United States. This move marks a significant step in enhancing the EV ownership experience, providing Hyundai drivers with greater flexibility and convenience during their travels. The integration of Tesla Superchargers into Hyundai’s charging infrastructure underscores the growing collaboration within the electric vehicle industry.

Hyundai’s latest collaboration with Tesla builds on earlier efforts to enhance EV charging accessibility, previously limited to select regions and models. This expansion allows a broader range of Hyundai’s electric vehicles to tap into the Supercharger network, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting its customers’ needs.

How Will Hyundai Drivers Benefit from Tesla Superchargers?

Owners of Hyundai’s Kona electric, Ioniq hatchback, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 N, and Ioniq 6 can now utilize approximately 20,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. This extensive network significantly reduces charging times and increases the convenience for long-distance travel.

“Starting today, more Hyundai EV customers will have access to 20,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, doubling their fast-charging options,”

stated Olabisi Boyle, Hyundai North America’s SVP of product planning and mobility strategy. This access is expected to enhance the overall ownership experience by providing more reliable and widespread charging infrastructure.

What Models Are Eligible for Supercharging Access?

The Supercharger access is available to owners of the Hyundai Kona Electric, Ioniq Electric hatchback, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 N, and Ioniq 6 models equipped with a CCS port. Hyundai is offering a complimentary CCS to NACS adapter to facilitate this connectivity. Customers who purchased their vehicles before January 31, 2025, will receive emails with instructions on how to claim these free adapters starting the week of April 7. This initiative ensures that a wide range of Hyundai’s electric lineup can benefit from Tesla’s fast-charging capabilities.

Will This Collaboration Expand Beyond the U.S.?

Currently, the Supercharger access is limited to the United States, but Hyundai has indicated plans to extend this collaboration to Canada later in the year. A spokesperson from Hyundai mentioned that additional details regarding the Canadian rollout will be announced soon. This planned expansion aims to provide Hyundai EV owners in Canada with the same charging benefits, further strengthening the company’s support for its electric vehicle customers.

By partnering with Tesla, Hyundai is positioning itself competitively in the growing electric vehicle market. This strategic alliance not only enhances the practicality of owning a Hyundai EV but also demonstrates the increasing interoperability between different EV ecosystems. As more brands gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, the overall infrastructure for electric vehicles becomes more robust, facilitating a smoother transition to sustainable transportation.

Hyundai’s record auto sales in the U.S. in 2024, with general retail sales up by 4% and EV sales increasing by 13% year over year, reflect the positive market response to these initiatives. The company’s investment in expanding charging infrastructure and offering complimentary adapters underscores its dedication to meeting the evolving needs of electric vehicle consumers.

Hyundai’s collaboration with Tesla enhances the charging accessibility for its EV owners, fitting seamlessly into the broader trend of increased cooperation among automakers. This partnership not only provides immediate benefits in terms of charging convenience but also sets the stage for future advancements in electric mobility infrastructure. As the electric vehicle market continues to expand, such initiatives are crucial in supporting sustainable transportation and meeting consumer expectations for reliable and efficient charging solutions.
