With the buzz around WWDC still lingering, attention is shifting toward the highly anticipated iPhone 16 series, set to launch this fall. This lineup is expected to feature the latest software upgrades, including iOS 18, and more. According to a new report, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first iPhones to incorporate Samsung’s advanced M14 OLED screens. This development raises expectations for display performance enhancements in Apple’s flagship devices. ETNews initially reported on this display technology upgrade.

Advanced Display Technology

The M14 OLED screens by Samsung are created using 14 high-performance materials, which indicates superior brightness and durability for the iPhone 16 Pro series. This display technology is specifically designed for flagship smartphones, bringing significant improvements over previous models. While the Pro models will benefit from this tech, standard iPhones in the series will continue to use M12 display technology, resulting in a notable difference in display quality within the same lineup.

Shared Technology with Pixel 9

Interestingly, the forthcoming Pixel 9 series is rumored to use the same OLED technology as the iPhone 16 Pro models. This speculation, based on a supply chain report from The Elec, suggests that Google’s flagship phones might for the first time adopt OLED materials of the same generation as those used in iPhones. Such a move could indicate a shift in display standards across major smartphone brands, potentially leveling the playing field in terms of display performance.

Enhanced Brightness Levels

A prior report indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro models might reach up to 1,200 nits of typical SDR brightness, which would be 20% brighter than the current iPhone 15 Pro models. This increase in brightness is likely attributable to Samsung’s new M14 OLED panels. However, the peak HDR brightness is expected to remain at 1,600 nits. These changes suggest that users could experience better visibility and color accuracy in various lighting conditions, enhancing the overall user experience.

In previous reports, it was noted that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max might feature larger screens, with the former expected to sport a 6.3-inch display and the latter a 6.9-inch display. These changes, along with the introduction of a new Capture button and other enhancements, indicate that Apple is making significant upgrades to its Pro models. The larger display sizes could cater to users who prefer more screen real estate for multimedia consumption and productivity tasks.

While details about the M14 OLED screens have been covered extensively, it’s worth noting that this is not the first time Apple has collaborated with Samsung for display technology. Over the years, Samsung has been a key supplier for Apple’s display panels, ensuring that iPhones consistently have high-quality screens. The move to M14 OLED screens is in line with this ongoing partnership, signifying a mutual commitment to technological advancements in smartphone displays.

In comparison to previous generations of iPhones, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to offer superior display performance due to the integration of cutting-edge OLED technology. This could give Apple an edge in the competitive smartphone market, where display quality often plays a crucial role in consumer choice. Additionally, the potential use of similar technology in the Pixel 9 series hints at broader industry trends toward adopting advanced display materials.

For consumers, the adoption of M14 OLED screens in the iPhone 16 Pro models means potentially better screen visibility and durability. This can contribute to an improved user experience, especially for those who use their smartphones extensively for media consumption and outdoor activities. As Apple continues to innovate, these enhancements reflect the company’s focus on delivering high-quality products that meet evolving consumer expectations.
