IT professionals are increasingly calling for greater government regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. A recent survey conducted by SolarWinds, which surveyed nearly 700 IT experts, reveals that 88% of respondents advocate for stronger regulatory measures. This growing sentiment highlights concerns over security and privacy as critical issues in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

What Are the Main Concerns About AI?

Security tops the list of concerns, with 72% of IT professionals identifying the need for protective measures to ensure infrastructure integrity. Privacy remains a related priority, as 64% of the surveyed group stresses the importance of robust regulations to safeguard sensitive information.

Rob Johnson, VP and Global Head of Solutions Engineering at SolarWinds, stated, “It is understandable that IT leaders are approaching AI with caution.”

How Does the Cloud Act Influence These Opinions?

The findings align with current legislative efforts, particularly the rollout of the EU’s AI Act and recent proposals for AI legislation in the UK. These actions signal a global recognition of the necessity for regulatory frameworks in technology. Such developments come at a crucial time when balancing innovation with safety is on the agenda for many governments.

What Are the Challenges Beyond Regulatory Needs?

Beyond the regulatory focus, the survey spotlights significant concerns regarding data quality in AI systems. Only 38% of participants reported having high levels of trust in the data quality utilized for AI training. Many IT leaders attribute problems experienced with AI to algorithmic errors linked to insufficient or biased data, emphasizing the need for high-quality datasets.

Johnson further emphasized, “High-quality data is the cornerstone of accurate and reliable AI models.”

A lack of confidence in readiness to meet AI data demands persists, with only 43% of professionals expressing assurance in their organizations’ capability. The perception of slow implementation of AI solutions adds to these concerns, highlighting a critical need for organizations to improve both data practices and regulatory compliance.

As AI technology continues its significant presence in various sectors, these findings from SolarWinds highlight urgent calls for enhanced government oversight and the establishment of strong data practices. Addressing these areas is essential for fostering trust and successful integration of AI in organizations.
