At CES 2025, Deere & Co. introduced four innovative autonomous agricultural and industrial machines, marking a significant expansion in their robotics portfolio. The lineup includes fully autonomous enhancements to their flagship 9 Series tractors, a sprayer tailored for orchards, a pilot autonomous dump truck for mining, and a forthcoming electric autonomous mower slated for release later this year. These advancements reflect John Deere’s ongoing commitment to integrating autonomous technology into large-scale operations, aiming to increase efficiency and reduce the reliance on manual labor.

John Deere has progressively integrated autonomy into its machinery over recent years. Initially launching the autonomous 8 Series tractors at CES 2022, the company has now extended full autonomy to its most powerful models. This progression underscores Deere’s strategy to enhance their product range by building on previously established autonomous technologies, ensuring seamless integration and improved performance across different applications.

How Does Full Autonomy Enhance the 9 Series Tractors?

The 9 Series tractors, available in both 9R and 9RX configurations, now come with an autonomy package that can be factory-installed or retrofitted. These tractors boast four-wheel drive and up to 830 horsepower, making them essential for large-scale farming operations. John Deere’s Chief Technology Officer, Jahmy Hindman, stated,

“If there’s a sensor modality that we can bring to bear that gives you superhuman capability in the machine, we should do that.”

This autonomy allows the tractors to handle complex tasks such as tilling and cultivation with minimal human intervention.

Can Autonomous Sprayers Revolutionize Orchard Management?

John Deere also introduced a fully autonomous sprayer designed specifically for orchards. Traditional GPS systems face challenges in orchard environments due to dense canopies, but Deere’s sprayer employs nine cameras, lidars, and sensors to navigate accurately. The autonomous 5130ML model demonstrated the ability to follow “skip row” patterns efficiently, reducing the need for manual monitoring and enhancing the safety of operators by keeping them away from chemical application zones.

What Impact Will the Autonomous Dump Truck Have on Mining Operations?

The company has commenced trials of its autonomous 460E-II articulating dump truck (ADT) for mining applications. Measuring 34 feet long and capable of hauling over 92,000 pounds, this ADT is designed to perform repetitive material transport tasks within quarries. Maya Sripadham, a senior product manager at Deere, mentioned,

“The great thing about a quarry is it is a structured environment… It’s a great starting point for construction autonomy.”

This technology aims to optimize resource allocation by allowing human workers to focus on more complex tasks.

The newly launched autonomous electric mower represents John Deere’s venture into commercial landscaping automation. Equipped with a 21.4kWh battery and utilizing the company’s Generation 2 autonomy stack, the mower offers up to 10 hours of continuous operation. This product is expected to enhance precision and reduce maintenance compared to traditional gas-powered mowers, catering to the growing demand for sustainable and efficient landscaping solutions.

John Deere’s latest autonomous offerings not only expand their technological capabilities but also provide practical solutions across various industries. By leveraging existing technologies like the StarFire GPS receiver and AutoTrac Turn Automation, the company ensures that their autonomous systems are both reliable and user-friendly. These advancements position John Deere as a leader in agricultural and industrial automation, paving the way for more intelligent and efficient operations.
