Australia is poised to make significant strides in renewable energy storage with the impending arrival of Tesla Megapacks at the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH). The site, located near Melton, Victoria, is under construction and will soon house one of the world’s largest battery systems. With Minister Lily D’Ambrosio of Victoria announcing the upcoming installation of 444 Megapacks, the project will provide a substantial boost to the region’s energy capabilities. When fully operational, the MREH will offer 600 MW and 1.6 GWh of energy storage, sufficient to support approximately 200,000 homes during peak times.

The State Electricity Commission (SEC), rejuvenated after a period of inactivity, is spearheading the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub. In collaboration with Equis Energy, which has a solid track record of developing renewable projects across Asia-Pacific, the SEC plans to invest $245 million in this flagship initiative. The total expenditure for the MREH is projected at around $1 billion, marking a significant commitment towards renewable energy in Victoria. The regional government’s ambition extends to achieving 2.6 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, with further plans to expand to 6.3 GW by 2035.
