Users can teach a robot using one of three modes: remote operation through a joystick, physically guiding the robot’s movement, or executing the task themselves for the robot to observe and replicate. The MIT team brought the VDI and a collaborative robotic arm to a manufacturing innovation center to evaluate its versatility. “We imagine using our demonstration interface in flexible manufacturing environments where one robot might assist across a range of tasks that benefit from specific types of demonstrations,”

said MIT postdoc Mike Hagenow. Testers generally favored the natural demonstration approach but noted scenarios where teleoperation or kinesthetic teaching might prove advantageous.

Feedback from manufacturing professionals indicated that the VDI’s flexible teaching interface could expand robots’ utility beyond structured settings. The ability for robots to learn from multiple teaching styles positions them as adaptable co-workers in diverse environments from automated manufacturing lines to healthcare or home assistance, mirroring the evolving role of collaborative robots from companies like FANUC and ABB.

Adopting versatile interfaces like MIT’s VDI enables a more inclusive approach to robot training, cutting across previous barriers tied to programming or specialized technical knowledge. This could increase the range of end-users able to teach robots, support faster upskilling for new tasks, and provide manufacturers with agile options for task automation. Practical experiences suggest that task monitoring, performance feedback, and user adaptability are crucial for future iterations, especially as robots become increasingly prevalent outside the lab.
