A new association has emerged with a mandate to merge terrestrial and space-based networks to provide comprehensive and seamless global connectivity. The Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), formed by industry leaders such as Viasat, Inc., Terrestar Solutions, Ligado Networks, Omnispace, and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), aims to foster the Direct-to-Device (D2D) ecosystem, ensuring scalable, sustainable, and affordable connections universally.
Global Ecosystem Development
The MSSA intends to utilize over 100 MHz of L- and S-band spectrum designated for mobile satellite services (MSS), aligning with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards. This integration will enhance mobile and internet services provided by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Over-the-Top (OTT) providers. The association’s strategy involves leveraging MSS licensed spectrum for immediate Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) services, benefiting from an existing international regulatory framework with no interference with terrestrial networks, and furthering 5G New Radio (5G-NR) services.
Collaboration for Enhanced Connectivity
Founding members aim to combine their expertise with other partners to merge terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), catering to the needs of every device, at any time, and in any location. This initiative is set to broaden connectivity and foster competition across various industries, such as cellular, industrial, government, and automotive. The Association also seeks to cultivate a supportive environment for solution providers, including satellite operators, OEMs, and chip vendors.
Mark Dankberg, Chairman of MSSA and CEO of Viasat, emphasizes the transformative potential of integrating satellite connectivity with consumer mobile devices. He envisions MSSA as a key advocate in the growth of the space economy, promoting open and standardized solutions for D2D and IoT services, while preserving the integrity of essential MSS aviation and maritime safety services.
MSSA’s overarching objectives include fostering interoperable architectures, enhancing global roaming, and advocating for efficient resource use. The Association also seeks to be a neutral forum for the coordination of 3GPP NTN and other international standards activities. Additionally, it supports the integration of space networks into national infrastructures, ensuring alignment with local regulatory and security frameworks.
The Association’s efforts mark a significant step toward improving global connectivity, offering a neutral platform for the development of international standards, and participating in the burgeoning space economy.
