Neuralink is a neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk in 2016, focused on developing implantable brain–machine interfaces (BMIs). The company’s primary goal is to create devices that can help people with neurological conditions, such as paralysis or spinal cord injuries, by allowing them to control computers and other devices with their thoughts. The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, demonstrated the device’s potential by controlling a computer cursor through his thoughts. Before the implant, Arbaugh depended on a stick in his mouth to interact with digital devices. Post-implantation, he experiences a significant improvement in his independence and a decrease in reliance on caregivers. Despite initial issues with the tiny wires retracting, which reduced the functionality of the electrodes, Neuralink successfully restored the implant’s ability by refining its algorithm to be more sensitive to brain signals.

Elon Musk has ambitious plans for Neuralink, aiming to provide implants to eight more patients within the year as part of ongoing clinical trials. He emphasized that the implant has performed extremely well, providing a robust signal and high electrode activity.
