The gaming industry is witnessing a dramatic shift in the treatment of virtual creatures as Temtem, a popular creature-battling MMO, introduces a radical new gameplay feature. In response to the extraordinary sales generated by Palworld, a game that encouraged players to dominate and exploit Pokémon-like beings, Temtem developers have now incorporated a feature allowing players to inflict chaos upon their collection of adorable monsters. This new mode, named Temtem Swarm, is a distinct departure from the game’s traditional collecting and training gameplay, offering players an opportunity to engage in a “bullet heaven” battle against swarms of the game’s charming creatures.
A Fresh Take on Monster Mayhem
Temtem Swarm draws its inspiration from the game Vampire Survivors, as evidenced by the announcement trailer showcasing a top-down view of the map where players command their Tems to display colorful and powerful abilities against dense clusters of fellow creatures. The spinoff maintains a level of faithfulness to the original Temtem spirit by having the creatures battle among themselves rather than being controlled by human characters, though it still presents a jarring scene as these endearing beings engage in catastrophic combat.
Innovative Gameplay and Cooperative Features
Beyond the frenetic gameplay, Temtem Swarm introduces several unique elements. It adapts the concept of evolutionary power-ups, allowing creatures to gain new abilities as they progress in strength, akin to the levelling mechanics found in Vampire Survivors. Crema and GGTech Studios, the game’s developers, highlight that the game was designed with three-player online cooperative play in mind. This collaborative mode incorporates a “Ghost Mode” feature, enabling fallen players to continue assisting their teammates in a spectral form.
The launch of Temtem Swarm is currently scheduled for PC, aiming for a Q3 2024 release. The developers have also confirmed that the game will be fully compatible with the Steam Deck upon release, taking cues from Vampire Survivors’ successful adoption on the portable gaming device.
