In a significant development during their ongoing strike, SAG-AFTRA has introduced new waivers to support budding game developers. This move aims to foster creativity among students while respecting the union’s stance. By permitting select projects, the union balances advocacy with educational support.
Previously, SAG-AFTRA had not provided explicit support for student-led initiatives, leaving many aspiring developers without access to professional talent during strikes. This new agreement marks a departure from past restrictions, offering a more inclusive approach to industry challenges.
New Waiver Agreements Introduced
SAG-AFTRA introduced the Student Interactive Waiver Agreement and the Game Jam Waiver Agreement, allowing union members to participate in specific student projects and game jams. These waivers set criteria to ensure that the projects align with the union’s objectives while providing actors with authorized work opportunities.
“Our members are passionate about this industry and they want to be able to participate in these types of projects where the future of video games is being shaped,” stated Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator.
Strike Motivated by AI Concerns
The ongoing 8-month strike, which began on March 26, is primarily driven by fears over artificial intelligence. Actors seek protections against AI misuse, particularly the unauthorized use of their likeness and performances. This stance reflects broader industry apprehensions about technology’s role in creative fields.
“I feel worried not because the technology exists, not even because game companies want to use it. Of course they do, they always want to use technological advancements. I just imagine a video like this coming out that does have someone’s performance attached to it.”
Impact on Major Game Studios
The strike has affected prominent game studios, leading to reused voiceover clips in games like League of Legends and incomplete voice lines in Destiny 2 episodes. These changes highlight the strike’s tangible effects on game production schedules and content delivery.
The introduction of waivers by SAG-AFTRA presents a potential pathway for collaboration between striking actors and emerging game developers. This initiative not only aids actors in maintaining professional engagement but also supports the growth of the gaming industry by nurturing new talent. Moving forward, the balance between protecting actors’ rights and fostering innovation will be crucial in resolving the strike.
