Much of the recent criticism directed at OpenAI and other firms centers on the quantity of water used to cool large servers that run models like ChatGPT. Concerns were amplified by figures circulating on social media, suggesting that multiple gallons of water were consumed per user query. Addressing these claims, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman disputed the accuracy of such numbers, calling them “totally insane” and divorced from reality.

Altman explained that many A.I. developers have moved away from direct cooling management, increasingly relying on recirculating liquid systems rather than traditional evaporative methods, reducing the demand for fresh water. Major brands like Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Amazon have set public goals to replenish more water than they use by 2030. Despite these efforts, industry analyses show that a majority of data center capacity—56 percent, according to Xylem—remains dependent on evaporative cooling, and total A.I.-related water usage continues to rise significantly year over year.

Will Alternative Energy Solve Electricity Demands?

The issue of rising electricity requirements for A.I. forms another significant part of the debate. Data centers currently account for a growing percentage of worldwide electricity consumption, a figure that the International Energy Agency expects to more than double by 2030. In response, companies are making investments and agreements aligned with renewable sources, including nuclear, wind, and solar energy in a bid to lessen their environmental footprint.

According to him, the energy expenditure for training humans from childhood may be similar to what is needed for machine learning models.
