Samsung has introduced its Galaxy S24 series, echoing Google Pixel 8’s initiative by extending Android/One UI and software update support to an unprecedented seven years. Samsung Mobile President TM Roh highlighted this advancement during the Unpacked event, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
Extended Update Cycle for Flagship Devices
The Galaxy S24 series, which comes with Android 14 out of the box, is poised to receive major system updates up to Android 21. Additionally, Samsung committed to delivering consistent software updates, including security patches, until January 2031, underscoring the company’s emphasis on longevity and customer satisfaction.
Competition and Legacy Device Support
Previously, Samsung offered up to four years of OS updates for its Galaxy range, with recent Galaxy A models also benefiting from this support. The introduction of the Galaxy S24 series, however, represents a significant leap in Samsung’s software update policy, rivaling Apple’s seven-year support for iPhones and matching Google’s recent commitment for the Pixel 8 series.
The move by Samsung raises questions about whether this extended update support will retroactively apply to older models such as the S23 and S22 series, which could enhance the value proposition for users of Samsung’s previous flagships.
