Earlier reports indicated that the HL7900 was pending critical regulatory approvals for the Japanese market. Since then, Semtech has successfully navigated these regulatory pathways, enhancing its position in the smart meter industry.

Certification from KDDI and Radio Regulation Approval

The HL7900 module has obtained network certification from KDDI Corporation, a leading telecom operator in Japan, alongside Japanese Radio Regulation approval for its short-range radio capabilities. These certifications are essential for manufacturing and deploying compliant IoT devices within Japan’s regulated telecommunications environment.

HL7900’s Role in Japan’s Energy Efficiency Goals

Smart meters play a crucial role in optimizing gas distribution and supporting Japan’s energy efficiency objectives.

“The HL7900’s minimized battery requirements make it an energy-efficient choice, with power consumption reduced up to 80% compared to earlier generation modules,”

a representative noted. This efficiency significantly extends the operational life of battery-powered smart gas meters across extensive networks.

Interoperability and Hybrid Connectivity Features

Semtech’s HL7900 module ensures interoperability with the U-Bus Air Spec.2 protocol, an advanced communication standard from the Japan Utility Telemetering Association (JUTA). Powered by Altair’s ALT1350 chipset, the HL7900 integrates both cellular and short-range radios, offering hybrid connectivity through LTE-M/NB-IoT and protocols like U-Bus Air Spec.2. This integration reduces the need for additional systems, minimizing the module’s overall size and optimizing costs.

The approval of Semtech’s HL7900 5G LPWA module in Japan represents a strategic move towards enhancing smart metering infrastructures with reliable and energy-efficient technology. By securing essential certifications and demonstrating strong interoperability, Semtech positions itself as a key player in the IoT solutions market, addressing both cost and power efficiency challenges faced by utilities. This development not only supports Japan’s current energy modernization efforts but also sets a foundation for future advancements in smart infrastructure globally.
