Hospitals and surgical teams are increasingly adopting robotic solutions to address complex procedures and widen patient access. The SSi Mantra system from SS Innovations International Inc. has become a notable presence in the medical robotics sector, marking its use in over 4,000 surgeries by mid-2025. As medical device manufacturers continue to seek regulatory approval in key markets, this milestone points to a growing trend in both the scale and scope of robotic-assisted surgeries worldwide. Discussions about increasing technological access to healthcare in lower-resourced regions have added urgency to these developments. With additional competitors making strides in telesurgery, the adoption process is set for an international stage.

Previous information about the SSi Mantra system highlighted its early deployments in India and limited regulatory reach, mainly within the country and neighboring regions. Earlier reports noted fewer completed surgeries and did not detail the breadth of surgical specialties involved or the extent of telesurgery. Recent updates now show both expanded procedure numbers and geographical diversification, reflecting increased system adoption and regulatory approval. There has also been a shift toward emphasizing remote surgery capabilities, a development that earlier communications only briefly mentioned.

How Has SSi Mantra Achieved 4,000 Surgeries?

The SSi Mantra system has reached the milestone of 4,000 surgical procedures without reports of complications, injuries, or mortalities. Among these cases are approximately 215 cardiac surgeries, including six performed remotely across India using the SSi Mantra 3. Following its introduction to the market, SS Innovations has installed 80 systems in 75 hospitals and gained market clearance in seven countries. With plans to enter the U.S. and European Union, pending regulatory reviews could further expand its impact on surgical care.

What Makes the SSi Mantra System Distinct in Robotic Surgery?

The SSi Mantra system offers modular, user-oriented features such as three to five robotic arms and an open-faced command center for surgeons. The inclusion of a 32-inch 3D 4K monitor, real-time imaging, and up to 40 different types of robotic endo-surgical instruments enables flexibility across multiple disciplines. Regulatory approval by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization for telesurgery and teleproctoring in India allows for both medical education and remote surgical procedures. SS Innovations’ suite of SSi Mudra instruments further broadens the spectrum of operations supported by the platform.

Are Other Companies Also Expanding Robotic and Remote Surgeries?

Other medical device brands have entered the remote and robotic surgery market. MicroPort, for instance, completed robot-assisted surgeries in sub-Saharan Africa using its MedBot surgical robot, including remotely operated procedures through the Toumai system. As the field grows, companies are focusing on increasing accessibility to advanced surgical solutions globally and addressing challenges associated with cost and adoption.

“The milestone of 4,000 robotic surgeries successfully performed with our SSi Mantra surgical robotic system reflects its world-class quality, differentiated features, ease of use, and growing acceptance by leading physicians in India, where SS Innovations leads the market, and beyond,” stated Dr. Vishwa Srivastava, chief operating officer and chairman of the board.

Robotic surgical systems have reached a pivotal stage of international expansion and clinical validation. Hospitals seeking to adopt such technology will need to consider regulatory progress, system affordability, and ongoing education for effective use. The SSi Mantra’s ability to support a variety of procedures, including cardiac, urology, gynecology, and more, positions it as an option for institutions prioritizing versatility and teleoperation. As SS Innovations readies its FDA submission and anticipates a CE Mark decision, the coming years may see greater competition and innovation in making advanced surgery more broadly accessible. Stakeholders may benefit from closely following upcoming regulatory milestones, understanding differences among platforms, and monitoring evolving standards of safety and efficacy.
