As the fiscal year 2024 kicks off, I find Warner Bros. Discovery in a tough spot with its game division. The superhero game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League didn’t hit the sales targets we anticipated, causing a bit of a stumble out of the starting blocks for Q1. Last year’s release of Hogwarts Legacy set a high bar with its significant financial success, which we are now struggling to match.

Steam Performance and Market Comparison

Delving into the specifics, Suicide Squad’s underperformance on platforms like Steam is stark. Despite a “very positive” rating, its peak player count of 13,459 dropped drastically, now hovering around just 704 players. This is concerning for a game designed for live-service co-op play, especially when compared to recent Steam hits that are attracting hundreds of thousands of concurrent players.

Pre-Launch Challenges

Reflecting on the road to launch, Suicide Squad faced multiple delays from its initial 2021 release date, finally debuting in February 2024. Expectations were mixed as the launch drew near, and while we saw some potential in the game, it wasn’t enough to overshadow the apparent issues.

To provide some context, I found a related article on PC Gamer titled “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League review,” which detailed how the game displayed moments of brilliance but ultimately failed to consistently deliver throughout. The review mirrored our internal assessments and the market’s lukewarm reception.

Contrast this with the previous year’s triumph with Hogwarts Legacy, which, despite controversy, sold over 22 million copies. Our president, David Haddad, even boasted about it being the top-selling game industry-wide for the year 2023.

Looking ahead, developer Rocksteady has promised to bolster Suicide Squad with new post-launch content, including new missions and characters like Joker and potentially Brainiac. There’s also an offline mode in the works. Still, the game’s soft sales and Warner’s history of cutting losses with completed projects don’t inspire much confidence in its future prospects.

The way forward for Suicide Squad and our game division will undoubtedly require creativity and strategic thinking. Despite the setbacks, our commitment to delivering quality entertainment experiences remains unwavering. We’ll be looking to rebound from this quarter’s hurdles and adapt to the ever-changing gaming landscape.
