Tesla is introducing new vehicle variants in the Chinese market, targeting both range-conscious and space-seeking consumers. With the regulatory approval process underway, Tesla’s latest Model Y L and a new Model 3 variant are expected to expand the automaker’s appeal. These entries underscore a push to position the company more strongly in China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector. Market watchers suggest Tesla’s increasing range capabilities and adjustable seating options could attract families and long-distance drivers who have been considering alternatives. Expectations are rising for a competitive response from local Chinese EV manufacturers.

References to the Model Y L model first cropped up in Chinese regulatory documents last year, but earlier reports indicated a lack of clarity on seating configuration and battery specifics. New updates reveal a shift to greater energy capacity and a six-seat interior, diverging from the earlier five-seat standard. These changes reflect Tesla’s broader strategy to tailor its global offerings for the priorities of diverse regional markets, particularly where long range and passenger comfort are highly valued. The confirmed Model 3+ designation also clarifies product positioning compared to past speculation, which only hinted at incremental improvements. Both models now set new benchmarks for Tesla’s Chinese line-up, exceeding prior range records.

What New Features Define the Model Y L?

The Model Y L, listed under regulatory code TSL6500BEVBA0, is distinguished by its increased battery size and a six-seat configuration, aimed at larger families or groups seeking additional space. Featuring dual electric motors—142 kW in the front and 198 kW in the rear—the vehicle utilizes an 82.0-kWh LG-supplied lithium-ion battery pack weighing 465 kilograms. This configuration is designed to deliver a maximum range of 751 kilometers under the Chinese Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), designating it as the longest-range Model Y yet in China. Tesla commented,

“We’re committed to expanding customer choices by bringing new configurations tailored to regional needs.”

How Does the Model 3+ Set a New Range Record?

In parallel to the Model Y L announcement, Tesla registered a new rear-wheel-drive Model 3, identified as the Model 3+, offering up to 830 kilometers of estimated range on the CLTC standard. Powered by a 78.4-kWh LG battery and a single 225 kW electric motor, the Model 3+ surpasses the company’s previous maximum range for any model in the Chinese market. This model weighs 1,760 kilograms and represents Tesla’s effort to incrementally improve its existing product lines. Tesla stated,

“By pushing the boundaries of range, we aim to address the demands of China’s expansive geography.”

How Do Tax Incentives Affect Tesla’s Launch?

These specifications were disclosed through the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as part of the nation’s system for approving new energy vehicle models eligible for vehicle purchase tax exemption. Eligibility for such exemptions is a significant factor for consumer adoption of electric vehicles in China, potentially boosting the competitiveness of the new Model Y L and Model 3+. Inclusion in this program aligns the models with government goals for wider electric mobility adoption and could translate into higher sales, particularly as the domestic EV market becomes increasingly competitive.

The new entries offer practical improvements over former variants, such as the previous five-seat Model Y and a long-range Model 3 capped at approximately 753 kilometers. The strategic inclusion of more seats and increased range responds directly to evolving consumer trends in China, where extended driving distances and multi-passenger transport are commonly required. These launches may prompt rival automakers to accelerate their own advancements in range and versatility, intensifying market competition and advancing innovation. For buyers considering a switch to electric mobility, details such as energy density, curb weight, and driving range provide critical differentiators when comparing models, making Tesla’s latest models worth close attention for anyone prioritizing distance or group travel in vehicle selection.

  • Model 3+ achieves the brand’s highest range of 830 km on the CLTC standard.
