Tesla has started a new rental program that allows customers a short-term Tesla driving experience with added benefits. Positioned as an alternative for those who are considering an electric vehicle but are not ready to buy, the initiative provides an accessible way for a wider audience to test Tesla’s features firsthand. The move also reflects Tesla’s ongoing strategy to grow its customer base by giving potential buyers an opportunity to experience the brand differently. Renting comes with options for various models in Tesla’s lineup and includes additional incentives designed to encourage new car purchases after the rental period.

Other reports about Tesla’s rental initiatives have focused on previous partnerships with third-party providers, where users had less access to perks like unlimited mileage or the latest Full Self-Driving upgrades. Previously, users were limited in terms of features and often paid higher daily rates compared to this direct-to-consumer offer. Now, the company seems to be leveraging its own infrastructure, offering benefits like free Supercharging that were available only to owners or in promotional events, giving renters a more complete sense of Tesla ownership and removing several past restrictions.

How Does the Tesla Rental Program Work?

The rental program is available for periods ranging from three to seven days, with daily rates starting at $60 before taxes and fees. Vehicles can only be driven within the state of rental, but there are no limits on distance or Supercharger usage. Customers can manage and monitor their rental car through the Tesla app, and each rental period includes the ability to use Full Self-Driving (Supervised), a feature not always accessible to the public.

What Additional Benefits Are Offered?

In addition to free Supercharging and Full Self-Driving (Supervised), customers who purchase a new Tesla within seven days of the rental are eligible for a credit of up to $250 towards their new car. These offers aim to make the switch to electric cars more appealing without requiring a long-term commitment. A representative for Tesla stated,

“Rent a Tesla and see how it makes every errand, commute, and road trip more fun. While it’s yours, try Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and control and monitor your vehicle with the Tesla app.”

Further details specify that all Supercharger stations operated by Tesla are included in the free-charging offer during the rental period.

Where Is the Program Currently Available?

At present, the program only operates in selected locations, including San Diego and Costa Mesa in California. Expansion is possible, depending on demand and available infrastructure. The program differs from traditional rental offerings by allowing unlimited mileage and integrating features typically reserved for owners. As described by Tesla,

“Schedule your rental for three to seven days starting at $60 per day (plus taxes and fees) and charge for free at any Tesla-owned Supercharger.”

Tesla’s new rental program is an attempt to bridge the gap between short test drives and full vehicle ownership, appealing especially to those reluctant to make an immediate purchase. Unlike previous third-party rentals that may have omitted some owner benefits, Tesla’s in-house program leverages its service and technical platforms, making key features easily accessible to renters. For consumers interested in trying an electric vehicle without long-term commitment, this offer could provide relevant insights into the daily realities of EV use, such as charging and advanced driver assistance. The strategy reflects a broader trend within the automotive industry, where immersive experiences increasingly play a role in consumer decisions. As Tesla continues to navigate the competitive electric vehicle market, such programs could inform both future buyers and industry standards related to EV rentals.
