China’s electric vehicle landscape could witness a significant regulatory development as Tesla presents a concrete timeline for obtaining full approval of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The wider deployment of advanced driver-assistance technologies has been under close government scrutiny, raising questions for both global automakers and consumers. Tesla’s pursuit of local certification for its highly anticipated FSD package reflects the complexity and competitiveness of the Chinese smart EV sector, where domestic and international players invest heavily in automated features. Many Chinese Tesla owners are eager to see these new technologies integrated into daily commutes, believing such solutions could set a benchmark for urban mobility.

Late last year, Tesla began limited beta testing of features similar to FSD in China under another name, while local regulatory hurdles slowed progress. Industry observers noted that China’s data localization policies and safety standards presented extra barriers for overseas vehicle makers. Meanwhile, Chinese EV competitors rushed to introduce their own advanced assisted driving systems, intensifying market rivalry. The recently announced timeline by Elon Musk for full approval now brings renewed attention to Tesla’s next moves in China, highlighting a blend of regulatory navigation and technological ambition.

When Will Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Be Fully Authorized in China?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told attendees at the company’s annual shareholder meeting that Tesla expects to receive final regulatory clearance for FSD in China between February and March 2026. By presenting a specific estimate, Musk provided shareholders and Chinese consumers with a firmer sense of the automaker’s road map.

“We have partial approval in China, and we hopefully will have full approval in China around February or March or so. That’s what they’ve told us,”

Musk stated, marking a notable projection for Tesla’s expansion plans in the region.

Which Tesla FSD Features Are Available to Chinese Drivers Currently?

In China, Tesla began offering a version of its urban autonomous driving features to select users as early as February 2025, labeled as “Autopilot automatic assisted driving on urban roads.” This allowed drivers to experience functions similar to FSD, including automatic lane changes, urban navigation, and traffic-aware cruise control. However, the solution remains subject to local restrictions and is not yet fully branded as FSD. Customer interest in these capabilities is growing, particularly as other Chinese automakers release similar driver-assistance features.

How Are Tesla’s Assisted Driving Features Performing Among Chinese Users?

Initial reports from Chinese drivers indicate that Tesla’s “Autopilot automatic assisted driving on urban roads” demonstrates consistent and reliable performance, especially in crowded city environments. One user highlighted the system’s ability to navigate narrow streets while maintaining safe speeds, as well as appropriately yielding to pedestrians and scooters.

“It slows appropriately on narrow streets and picks up speed on major roads,”

a local Tesla owner shared after two months of use, noting zero safety interventions during his experience. Another remarkable test involved a Model 3 completing a nearly 4,000-kilometer trip to Mount Everest’s base camp, drawing considerable attention online.

Tesla’s path toward full regulatory acceptance for FSD in China combines technological progress with the company’s willingness to adapt to strict regulatory requirements. While other countries have granted wider FSD pilot approvals, China’s layered approach to autonomous vehicle deployment stands out. Tesla’s approach to rolling out FSD incrementally aligns with its strategy in other regions but comes with specific challenges such as local data management and compliance with advanced safety protocols. Chinese competitors, meanwhile, are closing gaps in their own automated driving systems and have already implemented broad public trials.

Tesla’s announcement of a clear timeframe for FSD approval clarifies potential expectations for both investors and Chinese customers. The planned 2026 target suggests steady regulatory progress, but long-term adoption will depend on continued driver feedback, evolving government policies, and Tesla’s capacity to localize its tech stack. For Chinese buyers considering smart vehicles, understanding what FSD offers—and how it differs from existing domestic solutions—remains essential. Potential buyers may benefit from closely tracking regulatory developments and consumer reports, as the landscape for autonomous driving in China is likely to shift rapidly as new standards emerge.
