Apple has officially launched the Apple Vision Pro across its U.S. stores, allowing eager customers and tech enthusiasts to get their hands on the company’s latest foray into spatial computing. The Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York opened its doors to a moderate crowd, despite inclement weather, with Apple CEO Tim Cook personally welcoming the line of customers and media representatives.
Tim Cook Greets New Owners
As has become customary during Apple product debuts, Tim Cook marked the occasion with his presence at the Central Park-adjacent location. The release marked Apple’s first new product category since the Apple Watch nearly a decade ago. While the crowd was smaller than those seen at iPhone releases, enthusiasm was palpable among the attendees. Apple employees added to the festivities by cheerfully applauding customers entering the store.
At 8 AM ET, excitement peaked as Cook opened the doors, waving to the crowd. Customers who preordered the $3,499 spatial reality computer eagerly filed in, many taking the opportunity to snap a selfie with the CEO. The new device’s non-waterproof nature left those waiting in the rain to wonder about its resilience to elements.
The Store Experience
Inside the store, visitors found Apple Vision Pros on display, each paired with an iPad detailing the immersive experience. Some attendees tested the headsets, making gestures to interact with the device’s interface. Attention, however, was largely focused on Tim Cook, who amiably engaged with the crowd, taking photos and signing autographs.
In conversation with Cook, I shared my positive impressions of the product, to which he enthusiastically agreed. Despite the buzz, the actual testing of the Vision Pros seemed secondary as many were captivated by Cook’s presence. Customers left the store with their pre-ordered devices, ready to experience Apple’s newest offering.
The Apple Vision Pro offers a user-friendly setup, requiring simple gestures and gaze control, promising an intuitive experience even for first-time users. Despite some potential concerns about fitting, weight, and the need for frequent recharging, the Vision Pro represents a significant advancement in mixed reality technology.
Demo appointments for the Vision Pro are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for the initial days following the launch but can be scheduled online beginning February 5th. Demos are estimated to take about 30 minutes and include a guided setup by an Apple specialist. Customers considering purchasing the headset will need to factor in the $3,500 price tag.
