Apple recently expanded the capacity of its Find My app, now allowing users to monitor up to 32 items—a detail that has only recently been clarified. Although the capability was introduced with iOS 16, it was this week that the tech giant detailed the feature through a support document that gained attention from MacRumors.
Increased Tracking Limit to Accommodate More Devices
Previously, the limit was set at 16, which could have been easily exceeded given the growing variety of compatible accessories. Apple’s official support document specifies the counting scheme: an AirTag, third-party accessories, and AirPods Max are each considered one item, while the first-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro are counted as two items. Notably, the new AirPods Pro (2nd generation) takes up three slots in the tracking roster.
Second-Generation AirPods Pro and More Room for Devices
The app’s enumeration of the second-generation AirPods Pro is unique, counting each earbud and the MagSafe Charging case as separate items. Nevertheless, users still have ample space to add various other devices, including Beats headphones, and trackable third-party items such as bicycles and backpacks.
Speculation suggests that Apple might further enhance the Find My app’s capabilities with the launch of a second-generation AirTag, anticipated by around 2025. Current rumors hint at the inclusion of a more advanced ultrawide band chip to extend the range, alongside potential new features like louder sounds and alternative designs.
The delay in releasing a new AirTag model is reportedly due to unsold stock of the first generation. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to focus on improving the technology for the upcoming version.
As Apple continues to evolve its product lineup and software offerings, with updates like the much-anticipated iOS 18, outlets like BGR remain committed to providing the latest news and developments.
