With the enchanting allure of the ‘Harry Potter’ universe, ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ by WB Games has attained remarkable commercial success. Its achievements include topping sales charts, overtaking 22 million copies sold globally, and securing the title of the best-selling game in both the US and the UK for the year 2023.
Sales Domination Across Regions
Circana, formerly known as NPD Group, disclosed that ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ led the US market as the top-selling title of the year. It surpassed heavy hitters like ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ and ‘Madden NFL 24’, which ranked second and third respectively. Notably, other popular entries such as ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ and ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ also featured in the top five, with the latter not including digital sales in its tally.
Rare Achievement Against ‘Call of Duty’
The game’s success is underscored by its ability to outsell a new ‘Call of Duty’ installment in the US, an achievement only matched by two other games since 2009. Rockstar Games’ ‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ and ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ were the only other titles to have claimed this distinction in 2013 and 2018 respectively.
Platform-wise, ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ reigned supreme on PlayStation consoles, followed by ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ and ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’. While on Xbox, ‘Call of Duty’ claimed the top position with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ as a close second. On the Nintendo Switch, the game managed to secure the fifth spot, trailing behind frontrunners such as ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ and ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’.
The 2023 charts also saw a variety of new releases making their mark, including ‘Diablo 4’, ‘Mortal Kombat 1’, ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’, and ‘EA Sports FC 24’, among others. These titles demonstrate the vibrant and competitive nature of the gaming industry.
